Climate and Nature Bill (CAN Bill)

What Is the CAN Bill?
The Climate and Nature Bill—often referred to as the CAN Bill—is a proposed UK law designed to tackle the climate and ecological emergencies together, through a joined-up, science-led strategy. Introduced in Parliament by Roz Savage in October 2024, the bill would legally bind the UK to meet ambitious climate and nature targets, phase out fossil fuels, and restore biodiversity. It also calls for the creation of a Climate and Nature Assembly, giving citizens a direct voice in shaping national policy.

Why We Support the CAN Bill
At Greener Littleover, we believe that protecting nature and tackling climate change must go hand in hand. That’s why we support the Climate and Nature Bill—a bold, science-led proposal backed by the Zero Hour campaign. It’s the only UK legislation that treats the climate and nature crises as interconnected and equally urgent.

This bill offers a joined-up strategy to:
• Cut greenhouse gas emissions in line with the Paris Agreement
• Reverse biodiversity loss by 2030
• Phase out fossil fuels responsibly
• Empower citizens through a Climate and Nature Assembly
• Hold government accountable via independent monitoring bodies

It’s not just about targets—it’s about justice, transparency, and giving communities a voice in shaping a greener future.
What the Bill Would Do
The CAN Bill would:
• Legally bind the UK to meet climate and nature targets
• Create a strategy developed with public input via a citizens’ assembly
• End fossil fuel exploration and imports
• Restore ecosystems and protect biodiversity
• Ensure fairness for communities most affected by climate breakdown

Why Bird Decline Strengthens the Case for the CAN Bill
The loss of species like the willow tit and curlew isn’t just a warning—it’s a call to action. Climate change and habitat degradation are driving these declines, and the CAN Bill offers the joined-up response we need. By legally binding the UK to restore nature and cut emissions in line with science, the bill tackles the root causes of biodiversity loss. It also commits to reversing species decline by 2030 and protecting vital habitats through a national strategy shaped by public input. For communities like ours, where birds bring life to places like Millennium Woods and Sunnydale Local Nature Reserve, the CAN Bill is a chance to safeguard the sounds and sights of nature for generations to come.

Why It Matters to Derby
Locally, we see the impact of environmental neglect—from threats to green spaces like the Moorway Lane development to the loss of biodiversity in local areas.

The CAN Bill would help protect places like these by:
• Recognising nature’s value in law
• Supporting joined-up planning that considers both infrastructure and ecology
• Giving communities like ours a seat at the table

As a grassroots group, we know real change starts with people. The CAN Bill reflects that.
